you've used so many good modeling and lighting principles that its hard to critique. I did notice some shader issues that are causing some of your textures to look a bit toyish. I get that problem too, and it really comes down to finding the right shaders, and using bump maps where needed. when I saw the hi res version, the depth of field worked really well. I'm also not sure if the large stone walls of the canal are an accurate color and texture. I would normally invision such structures to be grayish with blotches of algae along the waterline.

Yeah, I agree. You are getting a mixture between a realistic rendering and a very nice cartoon drawing, giving one the impression that you did it on purpose, since it actually really looks good and professional. Either way, if you were going for a fully realistic rendering, do what Haider advices. If you are going for the in-between, you got it. If you are going for a catoonish rendering you messed it up, it is not! ;-)
