Rigging equipment must be used safely at the workplace. The fact that it is used to lift or hoist really heavy objects means, any problem with the equipment or the fact that it’s not used safely will endanger the lives of the people working with this equipment and also the people working near this equipment.
Let’s take a look at some of the things that can help use this equipment safely:
1. Choose equipment that has been properly tested
Pick only those rope slings/ alloy chains, etc. that have undergone stringent load bearing tests. This is why you must only choose rigging hardware from only the best manufacturers reputed for taking their pieces of equipment through a certified testing process. It is only thorough testing that ensures a load rating for the particular piece hardware used for rigging and it is only this rating that will give you an idea whether the sling/rope/chain that you have chosen can perfectly meet the requirements of the task on hand.
2. Only Authorized and Trained Personnel must be in charge of Rigging
Once you get your hands on the rigging equipment you are looking for, you need to assign the right person to handle it. You can’t have an amateur handling this equipment or you are putting the safety of your workplace and all its personnel at risk. A qualified and experienced rigger is not just an expert hand at using rigging equipment but is good at analyzing and evaluating the surroundings in which such equipment is used. He takes care of various aspects like available room for lifting objects, obstacles if any and anything else that helps him plan a safe route for lifting the object from one place to another.
3. Regular Inspections are a Must
Your rigging equipment is susceptible to wear and tear. Even the best quality equipment has its sell by date and this is why you need to inspect them every time before you use them. It is the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration that makes it mandatory for all rigging cranes, rigging vehicles, chains, sling ropes and clamp etc. to be inspected before use. The rigger must make sure that all equipment is safe for use and the ‘lifting task’ can be accomplished safely and securely.
When it comes to such equipment, you can’t be too careful. The results of not ensuring the safety of the equipment used for rigging can be catastrophic to say the least. One of the biggest dangers of lifting heavy loads is the load coming lose from its rigging and crashing down. In the best case scenario, this will only lead to the load getting damaged, but in the worst case scenario, it can lead to the loss of valuable lives. This is the reason why you must make every effort to ensure that you are able to use rigging equipment confirming to the most stringent safety standards.
