Hi all,
I was wandering which one to pick AMD XP 2400+ or Intel 2.4GHz (Northwood Core) and 1.5Gb DDR or 1.5Gb SDRam, I mean is DDR speed noticeable that much, while working in 3DS MAx 5.

Regards Sergio!

Well Greg should really be answering this as he is the man for the job! But as a first step do a price comparison.

Also take a look at http://www.3dluvr.com/content/maxbench.php

THis link was given to the forum by Greg in a previous topic

Hope that helps

Hi @lkion O,
thanks for lightning response!
I was at Greg's site, and those processors are quite close(With SSE option ON), and price almost identical, so I don't know what to do, specially with RAM prices between SD and DDR are quite big.

Regards Sergio!

Sergio... I'm on the same boat as you... but I would have to say when you add it all up you save a lot with AMD... mostly in the price of the motherboard. If you really want to go for it, I would the Intel with the FSB of 533 +hyperthreading. At that point I would also get the 2.8xeons... then your mobo, procs and ram can be in the $3000 range. It would seem like the only reason to get Intel... but you pay a heavy price. As opposed to the dual AMD 2400+ which will be around $1,200.

just spend as much as you can!!!

the speed difference is not noticable between hi-end amd or intel pc's these days.

amd's are certainly cheaper, but may need extra fan power and aren't as stable as pentiums running max and xp/w2k

i found intel systems to be less problematic for multimedia. i did a lot of audio post production work, realtime stuff with professional pci interfaces. everything other than intel doesn't really work here.
i also have less problems with intel opengl workstations.
athlon systems always seem to have some quirk or bug, which gets fixed by drivers just when the system is outdated.
i DON'T recommend athlon computer for users without advanced knowledge about computers.
athlon systems simply require more care and maintenance. (i know, its not amd's fault that microsoft favours intel, but that doesn't alter the fact)

for rendering amd systems are perfect, even with via chipset mainboards. i'm blown away by the price-performance ratio of a cheap athlon xp box, for rendering, office, 2d-cad or server use.

edit: the difference in required cooling doesn't apply anymore. both p4's and athlon xp's get very hot. both need at least 300W PSU's.
the difference is that there is a cooler included with boxed intel cpu's. thats a 10$ value.

I'll post more later....

But today the 2600+ MP was announced, along with price cuts across the MP line. The 2400+ MP's are now almost 120 USD less then a 2.4 Xeon at the same price point. (Around 200-220 USD per cpu).

I'll get back more on which is better...just answer these questions...

1. Whats the budget?
2. What apps will you be using?
3. What other apps will you be using? Judge your % usage. Like 75% max, 5% word, 20% games. etc.
4. Where are you located?
5. When is your purchasing date?

3000+ Barton's on the 9-10th, 3.06 Xeon's and 3.2 P4's upcoming.

R350 and R400 Radeon's just a month or so away.

Thanx guys,
your comments are really valuable!
I think I will go for Intel with DDR. Unfortunately I have to order today, so I don't have a lots of time to think.
Regards Sergio!

that is usually the best way to do... thinking about it makes it annoying and difficult. Either way... it will be pretty f'ing fast.
