According to MacCentral, the latest version (CS2) will increase the memory allocation for Photoshop on a Mac G5 beyond the current 2Gb limit - asssuming of course that you have more on board. I cannot find any reference to this on Adobe's site - but does anyone here know what the maximum memory limit will be on a G5? Would it be the full 8Gb? And could anyone include a link to some more info? i.e. What should the memory pref. settings be as a percentage of available memory etc, etc etc? Many thanks. Have been waiting for this news for a long time! Cheers, D. |

On a PC you have memory and programs use it. Actually, my biggest memory problem is that Photoshop does NOT release memory when I close an image but leave the app open and minimized. I have to shut down PS to make the memory available to everybody else again. Nothing else does that. Otherwise, everything just shares. |

No, Ernest, you don't need to allocate memory to apps in OSX, it is just that Photoshop had a theoretical 2Gb maximum,( though in reality it was advisable to only allocate an optimal 70% of it in Photoshop memory preferences.) But with a total of 8 Gb of memory available on the G5, it would have been great if Photoshop could have used more then the 70%x2Gb. Anyway, a helpful poster called Halo at cgtalk had this to say about the latest CS2 version: 3.5gb seems to be about the most commonly quoted amount... http://photoshopnews.com/?p=134#more-134 So at least it looks like we're up for a doubling of available memory for Photoshop, which is very welcome. There are also some useful tips in that article regarding Cache level allocations, and OS memory requirements. Cheers, D. PS: Ernest, guess what, your home town came up in a question on BBC's University Challenge here last night. Apparently they changed it's name to Ossining around 100 years ago, so it wouldn't have an association with that famous nearby "establishment" with the Native American name "Sing Sing". You learn something every day! Last edited by 4DM; April 5th, 2005 at 05:56 PM. |
