The best system?

bit off a strange one this but...

if money was no object what system would you setup just to run 3D studio Max?

i'm doing a paper on spec's and the info would be really useful!

I'd gander to limit the amount of money to...

"less then 10,000 USD"

In which case the best system in my eyes would be...

(I would assume the person purchasing this system would be using a 3rd party renderer like Vray, or Brazil...as anyone with 10k is not going to be using max5's default renderer if they can help it)

CPU: Dual 3.06 Xeon
Memory: 4 Gigabytes of Registered ECC PC2100 DDR (4x 1 gig dimms)
Video: Quadro 2000-FX
Sound: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Monitors: Two 23 inch Apple Cinema Displays, with ADC-DVI-I adapters. (Screen res 3840x1200)
HardDisc: 2x 76 Gig Seagate Rev3 15,000 RPM Cheetah's.
DVDRW: Sony DRU500AX (or whatever that later model is)
DVDROM: Pioneer 116-S

Once again, this is if someone gave me 10k ONLY to use on a machine

If you were going to be using the default max5 renderer, I'd go with an Athlon 2600+ MP instead.

Hi Greg,

Do those Cinema displays froam Apple works fine for PCs? I mean not just instalation, but also colour fidelity.

I saw 2 kinds of adapter: one for DVI and one for VGA. What is the diference between them?

Yes the cinema display's work for pc's. Its recommended you have a high quality video card though if your planning on getting one. Most individuals who are running them, are using either a Quadro 900XL or a 980XL, as this is one of the few cards which can actually support TWO of the displays.

DVI stands for digital video interface. Its usually a white plug on the back of a video card, quite a bit wider then the standard analog plug.

Its basically the new standard for digital displays, allowing a digital - digital connection, instead of the hd15 (analog) which is a Analog-digital-digital-analog conversion.

If your even THINKING about getting the apple lcd's, you better make sure you have a ultra nice DVI-I video card to go with them

cinema displays are gorgeous....but the price is way to prohibitive imho

for 10000$ i'd get 3 x 19" TFT's,
(samsung 191T) instead of the cinema displays.

slightly more sane pc specs than crossbows suggestion

dual xeon 2.8 with 2GB or something...
and a bunch of netrender boxes, cheap athlon xp's with 1 GB ram, per box.
and gigabit connections...

I thought about using just one dislay, not two. For this use what would be a good choice?
