Default Viz 4 will not stop 'initializing'

Hey...
I came here to post (out of necessity rather than interest) about a tech. problem I'm having starting up Viz4. Instead I've gotten distracted for the past hour reading a bunch of posts in the assorted forums, and now I'm sure I'll have alot of posts to follow this one. This seems like a great place; now let's see if there's any great minds out there that might be able to help me with my problem

Ok..Background: I have a copy of Viz4 that I've installed on my laptop (I'll get into specs in a bit). I didn't really need it on my laptop when i put it on there, so I didn't get around to authorizing it for months (I installed it about a year ago when I was working, now I'm in grad school, and NEED to use it). It worked fine before authorizing it (with the exception of that pesky 'you have so-and-so days to author-blah-blah-blah' ) Once authorized, it wouldn't work: it would start up, but once I tried to import something with the File Link Manager, it would crash. Since I do all of my modeling in AutoCad, I kinda need that, wouldn't you say? ALSO, I was able to model some small things...like spheres (wow) and render them, but if I did more than a few, or tried to apply a texture, it would crash as well. Crashes if I try to open up 'Help' too.
Anyhoo....eventually I noticed something that might 'hint' at what was the problem. If I minimize the Viz4 window, the load-up window/box/screen thingy is still lingering behind the actual working window. And what does it say? It still says "Initializing Autodesk Viz"...AND WON'T GO AWAY!! No matter how long I let it sit, it just stays there - never gets done initializing....ever. Is that part of the problem?
Oh yeah, the same program from the same disk is still running fine on my desktop.....

anyway...a little about the laptop, which as far as I know (keep in mind, I'm not much of a computer expert) is a better machine than my desktop.

Wanna hear it? Here it go....
  • HP 7010us laptop
  • 2.6 P4 chip
  • 768 mb RAM (dual slot 256/512)
  • NVIDIA GeForce4 448 Go vid card w/ dedicated vid. mem.
  • Windows XP Home

That's all I can tell you about that before going cross-eyed (like I said, I'm no comp-guy). I HAVE tried uninstalling, and reinstalling...several times. I don't know anything about cdilla, what it does, or why it has such a silly name....

more info...I have tried installing the service packs etc and anything that's available on the autodesk support download pages....

I've read Greg Hess' post about what to include, and if I've left something out, I apologize, but it's either because I don't know the answer, or I don't even know what it is that he's talking about.
Any help would be GREATLY, GREATLY APPRECIATED....that way I can start posting some pics of what I've done

Thanks in advance,
Don

hey ask this guy direct....by reading his posts he seems to know his shit.... I think he also works as a software engineer for Discreet. They make 3ds MAX which is somehow connected to Autodesk I think....I have both programs and the interfaces are almost identical. His name on here is "abicalho" . Good luck.
