Default The Maxwell Offer...

Good Day to you all.

Can someone tell me has Maxwell render sorted out their Rendering speed issue?

They can do all the sweet talking they want about how beautifull their final images are and how accurate they are, but at the end of the day if it is not relativly fast ( in comparison to the likes of vray) at what is dose, it is not for day to day use in the visualisation business.

it's a simple question that i would love an answer too, as to avail of the offer.

Thank you.

phil

maxwell is by far not fast. you cannot even compare it to vray as vray is probably the fastest renderer around.

i made a quick test with maxwell and the same scene rendered with vray. sorry for this simple scene, but i used all the software at a friend's office and didn't have time to create anything fancy.

the third rendering shows vray with progressive path tracing which is a similar technique to maxwell but without limiting bounces. you see at the same time the vray-rendering is less noisy.

as for now maxwell is not usable if you want fast results and you need big-size renderings, it is not optimized and the algorithm seems to be even quite slow because vray's progressive path tracing isn't optimized either, but still it seems much faster.

I'm a vray user but was so intrigued by maxwell I bought it.

To answer your question, no the speed is still slow. That said though it is at "alpha" stage and things are slowly being introduced and bugs fixed. I love the images it produces but noise is my biggest complaint. I certainly wouldnt use it at the moment for production unless you have time on your side. It's definately worth the $395 at the moment though especially as you get the final version. You'll never get a chance to get a rendering package for that low a price.

having had a play with it i'm going to buy it whilst it's still cheap but not today
for me i like the way they have set it up a a physical based render and taken this through to the interface having tried other gi renderes in the past i've always objected to the experimentation required to get to a point how many samples blah blah this seems to be point and shoot rendering
will it get so real that it will a red eye reduction tool in post video post is what i wonder

Not yet, that will come as they move from Alpha to Beta and then to the final product some time in June.

You've got to remember that Vray has been out for a long time, Maxwell is still in development and your not really compairing apples to apples here. I think when it's all finshed Maxwell will be at least as fast as Vray, at least that's what were all hoping.

I am curiuos, is it possible to even be close to VRay or Final Render (I am learning VRay now, and am a fR user - so far, VRay is not that fast, but I am just beginning)?
Final Render and VRay (and Brazil, I assume) use approximations and various techniques to 'fake' the the gi. This gives you control over the speed. With either one, if you crank up the settings so things are more accurate, render times go through the roof.
With Maxwell, I didn't think it was possible to 'fake' it, just to reduce the render time (which results in all that noise). I am sure it will be considerable faster, and personally, I'd rather have longer render times and less setup time, but I don't think it can ever be near as fast as fR or VRay (both of which should have new versions out by the time Maxwell is released in the final form).

Any thoughts?

Not to mention that they are still, relatively speaking, on schedule for a stand-alone version as well as the various plug-ins for the different 3D modelling softwares out there ( they already have plug-ins for Maya, and Rhino in addition to the Max plug-in with more to come), that they indicated they would develop. Vray (or rather Chaosgroup) has been promising a stand-alone version along with similar plug-ins for the likes of Cinema 4D, Lightwave for goodness knows how long ( the decimals between 1.4xx to 1.5 are slowly running out and 1.5 was their target for a stand-alone version.).

But that's besides the point, all these comparisons that people make between Vray ( and especially Progressive Path tracing) and Maxwell are completely off-base considering the fact that Maxwell after all, still is in Alpha stage. I mean, it's not even afair comparison to compare Maxwell to Vray v1.093 since that's a version beyond beta stage for vray.

Why not wait until the final version is out with all the optimizations and bug-fixes complete before bashing Maxwell's attempts to unseat the almighty Vray.
