A client wants me to setup an office. Mostly Cad drafting & he is really sold on the idea of a 27" monitor instead of duals. I know nothing about this it is out of my limit has anyone seen or used one?
Also I like a dual config because I can snap apps to each screen and always have them there. Does a 27" have a feature like that and what kind of card does it take? Thanks Last edited by Sawyer; April 21st, 2005 at 12:24 PM. |

Are you talking CRT or LCD? If it was a CRT with regular proportions I would say no way. But if its a widescreen lcd then that might be kind of nice.
But with a single 27", if it breaks or loses image quality, then you have to replace the whole thing. If you use duals, you can just replace whichever one needs replacing. I do all of my color work on one monitor and have other apps & toolbars on the other monitor. Plus with duals, you can angle them so that they take up less desk space, plus they can be closer to your face. |

Sorry yeah I believe its an lcd. Yeah I think I would rather have 2 21" monitors than 1 27" but I have not used one. He likes the idea of being able to see 2 apps at a time but I think it may be more complicated than he has thought about. But then again I have not used one.

Stick with dual screens otherwise you be constantly moving/tabbing windows. Even with a 27 screen chances are your res will unlikely top 1600X1200....whereas dual = 3200X1200

Go with the twin 21" LCD's - probably cheaper than a single 27" (The dell 2001FP is great and cheap - no more eye strain for about £900+VAT for two!) and gives heaps of real estate for windows, running two apps (I assume your going to have a twin processor machine if you're running Max etc?). I run it at 3200x1200 on a Dell and an old Belinea 21" CRT off a Quadro 980XGL, so newer cards should have no problems.
Digit Mag did a review on LCD monitors recently - basically anything over 21" didn't give anywhere near as good performance as a 21" display and as both the Apple 23" and Sony 23" displays are £1000 - £1400 a pop, I guess they are right if you can get twin 21" for under a grand! the Dell LCD's came out pretty well and I've no complaints about mine after 18 months of continous use. If you're doing colour critical work , then look at one of them being something like the Lacie 321 or NEC spectraview 2180 - about a £1000 each. Hope this helps Cheers Deri |

I hate it when managment people force the people who do the actual work into using a specific setup or software
Get a dual LCD setup and tell him to go swim in his fancy swimming pool and leave you to work peacefully. You can't spend the whole day minimizing maximizing windows. and moving windows. and 27" is not better than 2 21" or 2 19" or one 19" and one 17" |

Ok this is the thing - this would not be for me but a virtual office I will be working for. The owner/designer heard from a collegue that the "new" thing is a 27" monitor (meaning duals are "out"). So so far I have not been able to convince him otherwise.

I don't think there is a 27" monitor, with the exception of Apple's 30". He's probably looking at TVs. Don't get one, the resolution is not high enough for working on.
I disagree with the duals. I have a dual 21" at the office, but just bought Dell's superb 24" LCD ($1200, although it was $999 yesterday...figures). It got Ed's choice at PC Mag, resolution, refresh, etc., are about the best out there. I find that I use about 22-23" at work for Max and the rest to surf the web. It's a waste of my wrist to move across the bevel between monitors, but that's just me, too. I have a 21" CRT that I'll be using and, most likely, getting another 24" or 20" (that's on sale today for $421) for web and PS work. Some like the realestate, but for me it's just surfing space and I'll get that on my old system. Just seeing a 24" is pretty sweet. My 2 cents. If your client will pay, take a look at Apple's 30", I believe they run on PCs now. |
