Before I begin to render my final images, can we get some clarification on the same questions Ernest had in this thread a while ago? http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showth...l+aspect+ratio
I'm planning on rendering at 720x480 with a PAR of 1.0. Will this be ok? And like Ernest said, Premiere will either want to change this to .9 or 1.2 so I don't know if thats going to create any problems. Also, is Premiere capable of exporting to DivX format? If it is, I don't see that anywhere. I promise, I'll stop asking so many questions soon. |

If you can, use square pixels as we will be using a laptop and an LCD projector, so there is no need to account for non-square output like televisions. You should be able to export to DivX if you have the codec installed. DivX is an AVI format, so you just need export to AVI and chose DivX as your codec.

I was saying that with export to either MWV (Windows Media) or MPEG2 I have found that Premiere is doing odd things with forced PARs. Not so with the AVI formats, or MPEG1 or QT. I still am a novice with these things, so here errors I may make.

It actually was easy to set the PAR to 1.0 in Premiere Pro. So I will be doing 720x480 at 1.0, then hopefully figure out the DivX thingy.
I'm rendering all my frames now at ResPower. I'm so stressed! I've almost used up my 3000ghz hours so I don't know if or how much I'm going to have to pay to this thing finished. At any rate, ResPower has been so generous in allowing us time on their farm. I hope to be able to use it again soon - with shorter frame times of course. |

Hello all,
I dont mean to jump in the middle of the discussion but I will anyway. Pixel aspect ratio is a thorny issue, Standard def television (NTSC) is always either .9 if the final display device is a Standard 4x3 television, or 1.2 if it is a 16x9 device. The resolution that you are discussing is NTSC DVD resolution which is why software is going to try to give it some sort of pixel aspect ratio. Jeff mentioned that the final display device will be a computer so square pixels are preferred. Generally these days people are doing animations at 16x9, which translates to 720x405 in square pixel land. At neoscape we often render at HD, 1280x720 or 854x480 (square) then squeeze to 720x480 with a PAR of 1.2, (although you can save render time if you go straight to 720x480 1.2) If we then need to boil out a quicktime we make it 720x405. 720x480 square pixel is not a standard size (it turns out to be 9x6). I hope I have not stirred up a hornets nest. I am sure that whatever you render it will be good, the important thing is to think of the composition of the shot and how it fits within the chosen aspect ratio (with the chosen pixel aspect ratio of course!). Good luck to all the competitors, the work so far has been excellent! -Nils Neoscape |
