Default Material opacity affecting alpha channel

Hello I knoiw how in vray materials to have a material affect the alpha channel (check the box affect alpha) but how do you do this using other types of materials such as the standard 3ds max types of material.

They'll do it automaticaly, except when you have Reflection or Refraction.
