Default gradient perforated metal

Hey guys,
I'm trying to create a large plane of perforated metal mesh that is a gradient moving from highly perforated on the left hand side to un-perforated on the right. Is there a procedure for creating this type of texture map in Max? its driving me out of my damn mind....and I tried to model it and it ate my computers heart. Thanks for the help

sounds like something you could fake with an opacity map........

This is ironic. I am attempting to do the same effect. You can easily create a mask using the gradient ramp. view the screenshot for how to create the mask. Once you create the mask, then use the blend material to blend the desired metal material with a transparent material with the mask defining the areas of metal and transparency. in order to get the varying degrees of perferation, mix another mask that has tighter circles and blend them with a gradient mask. you might want to play with the output of the mixed masks to ensure that you have black and white circles rather than gray circles.

My problem with this method is that I am having trouble getting the materials to work with Mental Ray.
