Default Max hanging on startup

Just this morning I went to change my display driver and restart max so the changes would take effect and suddently max hangs as soon as soon as the viewports come up. (see attachment).

Here's a list of the things I've tried so far:

rebooting
installing sp1
uninstalling sp1
deleting 3dsmax.ini
updating nvidia driver

Looking at the autodesk forums I can see a lot of people who are having problems with max not starting with sp1 but this started before sp1 was installed (and I've uninstalled it since then anyway) It also seems that some are having issues with max and anti-virus. Here at work we did just deploy a new anti-virus, however I can start my render slaves just fine. We can't figure out how to disable the AV anyway, but are working on that. I'll probably try uninstalling and re-installing max soon, but I wanted to get some input here before I tried that.

Defiantly try disabling the anti-virus and re-installing the SP. It might have prevented it from writing or removing a file in there. What AV program are you using? I’ve seen a few posts about this internally but nothing in particular, I’ll ask around though.

Symantec Mail Security... so I'm told. I'm not sure what version though. I know absolutely nothing about it except that before I could right click on an icon in my taskbar and disable it and since the upgrade I can't. The main IT guy was here all night working on configuring and deploying it so he's not here right now to help with this. The other guy just left for lunch. Like I mentioned before though, all the other machines are working fine... it seems that it's just my workstation that is down. Also, I've uninstalled the SP and still hangs.

it's probably the enterprise edition that's controlled strictly from the admin console... I hate those, we use that here at Autodesk also and it erks me because you do need to turn it off from time to time.... anyhoo... have them completely disable all of it temporarily from your machine (make sure the auto enable is off also because it will magically turn it's self back on in a few minutes). The rest is what I got from support and seems to be fixing most issues. Please let me know if it does not...

So far, these problems have been resolved by having the customer:
-Run a Windows Update
-Restart the workstation and log in as administrator
-Shut down background applications (particularly anti-virus software)
-Reinstall SP1

For others this does appear to be fairly rare and machine specific at this time so no need to be too alarmed.

i had problems when i updated to the latest nVidia driver. i updated to 81.67. when i launched max, it ran extremely slow, taking a long time to do anything, and causing my processors to run at max.

i rolled the driver back to 77.18, the last one listed as certified for Max on nVidia's website.

in hindsight, i think it actually had something to do with what drivier i had assigned in Max and the nVidia driver. i can't remember if I was using Max with openGL/Direct X/software. but that was the problem i had.

I just changed to 77.18 and still no luck.

I've been fighting a loosing battle with this for about 8 hrs now. Our IT guy never did come in today so I was never able to disable the AV. I guess I'll have another go at it Monday. CYA!
