pan with middle mouse button in max8

I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but in max 7 I could pan by clicking the middle mouse button, now that I have installed max 8 I cannot do this anymore, it just zooms in/out, which is very frustrating. Does anyone know how to make the middle mouse button pan again?

customise > preferences > viewports check zoom about mouse point

I know it's an old question but I just tried searching for an answer to a problem that I'd just 'put up' with for ever it seems going from the pan/zoom CAD environment to a max one and I just found it!
