Default Path Deform Modifier Problem...

I am modeling an ornate bridge wall that follows an organic spline with elevation changes as well.

The wall face has beveled gothic windows. I created one window segment or "unit" and copied it creating a chain that is a little longer than the spline.

I selected all of the copies and applied a Path Deform modifier to them. It works nicely in the plan view, but the modifier doesn't want to read the z-values of the spline.

I have tried several variations: Adding a second Path Deform modifier and addressing the z-axis, attaching all the wall units into one, etc.

Anybody out there have some successful results with a similiar problem?
