I am planning on attending Siggraph this year and it will be my first time to go. I know very little about it, so anyone with at least one visit would know more than me!
I would appreciate a little guidance on what's worth seeing and learning and what may just be marketing hype... Anybody out there have any advice for getting the most out of this annual graphics conference? |

1. Network, network, network.
2. Attend as many specialty user group meetings (partys) as you can (AutoDesk, Newtek, Softimage, etc...) 3. Attend classes you are really interested in and talk to the presenters afterward 4. Sit through all the animation theater rotations 5. The seperate electronic theater showing at night is often sold out so either get your tickets early or resign to watch the DVD later. 6. Get your hotel as early as possible 7. Stay the extra day for the Arch Viz conference!!!!!! 8. Network, network, network. 9. Most of the product announcements are all over the web at the same time so enjoy the atmosphere more than anything. |

If money is an issue, I would recommend just the exhibition rather than paying for a full or partial conference pass. This is especially true if you are just getting into 3D. You need at least 2 full days just to thoroughly see all the exhibitions and the free events that go along with SIGGRAPH. Just learn as much as you can and speak to as many people as possible.
If you're serious about jump starting a career in visualization, then you should definitely attend the AVC. No better chance to get so much knowledge and networking than at this event. |
