As I've received nothing but problems and flack this morning with the criteria to download the survey, I've removed the posting requirements. You do still need to register on the forums to be able to download the survey however.

Can we all be happy now.

thank You Jeff.
well done.
I'm going to revise some of my clients rates.

gas prices are hitting the roof, arent they?

BTW: is it expensive to keep this poll going on? i dont know, but maybe 4000 samples will be more accurate, or maybe there is no reason do go higher?

If I could keep the momentum, it would be about $150-200/month, so not inexpensive. Depeite the site getting around 85,000 unique visits per month, it seems only a small fraction are willing to take the survey. I'm not sure how many more I could get and still deliver the results before the end of 2006. Which is one of the reasons I opted to end it now.

Every night on the news I hear how the American public feels about one issue or another. But read the small print of the 'poll' and you'll see that someone surveyed 972 people and somehow that explains the minds of 300 million Americans. Apparently a small sample is enough, if done right.

So your survey represents a much greater percentage of your target audience than those news organizations do. And it's a first. A real first. As in a starting point, not an end. So you did good. Thank you, it will help the entire industry.

Thanks Ernest, that means alot. I received a number of emails today from several ungrateful and appreciative people who feel somehow entitled to this that and the other thing, so it's nice to hear your's and a few others positive feedback today. It's amazing to me how some take for granted the time and money to do a survey like this. Hopefully it will do the industry good. That was always my intention. I would have liked to do a lot more reports and detailed analysis, but I've already put 50-60 hours into the salary survey alone, Probably 100-120 into the industry survey.

Thank you for the amount of work that went into this Jeff. I have a feeling that this will be a milestone posting that will be used as a reference for a really long time. And I imagine there will be a glut of people switching over to arch viz when they see some of these figures.

Before posting these results I consulted with many of the major players in the industry to solicit feedback on how they should be presented as I was aware they could affect many companies negatively if not done right. One of the major concerns was the numbers would promote over inflated salaries. Many of these firms complain that juniors with very little experience are demanding outragous salaries. Based on the overlay of the US, Canada and UK the median salary falls in the $40-50K range, which for 3-4 year experienced user seems very reasonable to me. As such I fell good that the numbers and sample sizes do a reasonably good job of representing the picture of our industry right now and for the most part do not show any abnormal skewing.

Years ago I took a max class taught by the worst teacher I have ever known. Anyway he said that first year out any freelancer should expect to make about $50k a year. Funny enough he did not work in 3d. Nor was he a freelancer.

Very good stuff Jeff,

Much appreciated. It has helped me gain some perspective, ecspecially since I only started my company a little over a year ago, it has given me good insight as to where I stand within the field in my area.

cheers,

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the effort.

Can't avoid comment on the choice for regional division, Understanding it was done with best of intentions, the results in my region (what has been labelled as Southern Europe) the results from there make no sense to me. Thankfully I can use some of the other region results to "create" my own biased picture

Cheers
