The white box means that the group selected is "closed" and if the group is "open" the box will be pink.
If you don't have the group selected, but you are still getting the bounding box, I'm uncertain of what's going on there.
However, it probably wouldn't hurt to ask your IT guy to buy you a faster more expensive video card
and see if that helps!
