Hi all
I am researching on work trends in the movie industry, limiting the research just to making digital sets and fx production. The first part is the production designer who designs like an art director and takes care of the entire production and the latter part is a digital artist who with a mixture of creative input manipulates the final fx production. I guess I got it right. So I need a elaborate insight into it of how this part of the digtal set production and fx production work in the movie industry. So with reference to that I have briefly charted down a list of queries. 1. Does every movie production company has a digital set production and vfx production unit? 2. Or these kinds of units work independently and are hired by the movie prdoction companies? 3. So however the unit is, whether it is part of the big production company or a seperate unit what is the basic hierarchy of work line in there? 4. What I mean to say for instance in game production there are designers, programmers, testers and producers. In the same way in design production and vfx what is the basic hierarchy of jobs? 5. How is the particular demand for these kind of jobs in the units? 6. Does anyone documented or researched on the insight of the present and future economy of these units ( i.e design production and vfx). I saw a salary survey for game industry giving an deep insight of what is actually happening with the people in there. Does movie industry has any documentation like this. This is it. I know I have asked posted a lot of queries. If anyone could come up with just one answer or all of them that wud be gr8. Thanks Kalyan |

I'm not sure if you're aware that this is the cgARCHITECT forum, and not the cgChannel or other sites related to the movie industry. We're doing just "boring" architectural visualisations and no sexy scifi movie work

Ingo,
This is a place for CG architecture, so if its used in "boring" visualisations or sexy sci-fi movies or even for special fx, its okay to ask here.. I mean, I would love to work on movies like Spiderman, Terminator 3, and what about The Fifth Element, like Eric Hanson did. There is an interview with him.. I personally love that kind of work.. And it is the most demanding form of arch visualisation IMHO.. And movies like spiderman and star wars episode 2 are both rendered in Mental Ray as well as Renderman.. |

Well quizzy, i think Indiana Strat realized my weird thoughts well. Although i've done a 3D set rendering for an animation company long ago i have no clue what he is asking for, and especially why he asks us. And yes i'm interested in dmp too, and no, i dont want to be Indiana Jones

Kal
Go to ilm.com they got a lot of job postings there with all of the requirements needed for handeling that type of work. Right now it seems like everthing is unionand rather hard to get into. Pretty much need unix scripting along with c/c++ to add to your 3d modeling skills. But those are the big boys & I am sure other production companies do it differently. Good luck. Myself I'd be happy to just plug in all of the power cords for the next star wars. Or be Indiana Jones it's all good.

Hi all,
Here is the most stupid and simplest tip I've ever given imho: Study film credits! You'll find plenty of jobs: Grip / Best Boy / Matte Painters / Hair dressers / Stunt doubles etc... Yes it's ever been there, just waiting for you to pick it up... rgds nisus
