I am using Max's Hair/Fur modifier to create grass. I've had excellent results with it on single renders.
One little artifact has popped up though. I am getting small black holes in a few areas. These can easily be repaired in Photoshop for a single image, but I want to use the H/F modifier on a new project where grass will be an important element in the scene. I am afraid that I may see the same problem over 1800+ frames...(ouch). Anyone out there seen this problem before and successfully tackled it for animation purposes? I am using Max 8, Mental Ray (Final Gather Mode only), a skylight and a mr area light. I also have the Hair Rendering Option set to MR Prim (Mental Ray Primitive Geometry) |

Hi Claudio, I have had the same prob. and the method i used around it was to create a second plane just above the hair and fur plane so that the grass comes through the second plane, then texture the second plane with a grass map. also, just check that you grass colors for the root and tip are of the same color but different shades. I haven't tried this with an animation though.
good luck. here is some grass I made some time ago ps. you might get more response to your problem(s) if you post in the correct forum, this one should be in the 3dsmax one |

Your grass looks good and I tried your suggestion, but...
...I came up with the same results. So I tried other things... I dropped the opacity of the plane generating the grass to zero and discovered that the holes are part of the grass itself! I changed the grass density to 100 and it just made the holes smaller. I did a test animation anyways and there is noise flicker and holes everywhere! Basically unusable... |
