Default glass not allowing HDRI lighting through

double sided volume with VRAy material, near 100% opacity, transpearency selected under fog parameters, fog color set to white.

No light is coming through from the HDRI, although the direct light used for the sun is. Anyone else have this issue before?

Off the top of my head:

Is affect shadows and affect alpha ticked? A temp solution would be to go into the properties of the object and turn off 'cast shadows'. It might also be because caustics needs to be enabled?

no, we can not figure it out. I have evrything checked the way it should be, this is very confusing. It is somebody else's model, not ours.
