Sounds like your P4 has some kind of configuration problem. A Centrino is a good deal faster as a P4 given the same clock speed and a 1.7 GHz Centrino is nearly en par with a 3 GHz P4, but it's nowhere near as much faster as your resulty imply.

Srek - are there any pc configuration proceedures we can go through for c4d to make sure we're running optimally? it'd be nice to know we're running up to speed.

None that i'm aware of. As i said, only a messed up configuration could account for that kind of difference and there is no general rule or way to determine if something is not ok.
In general each and every software gadget running parallel to CINEMA will eat up CPU time, so disabeling everything you don't realy need is a good idea.
The Task Manager can give you a hint if something is eating CPU time beside CINEMA.

i personally find that keeping the task manager open and minimised when using c4d gives even great stability.

Esteban-

Did you use Task Manager to monitor the CPU usage while rendering? The laptop should be a bit slower than one of the Pentium D's cores, with both the D should be about twice as fast. While rendering, you should see both cores working at full and Cinema should be at well over 90% CPU utilization. If it is, then you need to debug a Cinema config problem...

because basically the P4D has never been a great performer, its based on an inferior technolgy...is your centrino a core duo or a single Pentium M...
