The closest public transportation are the Red and Silver lines. The Red Line is the fastest subway and if your hotel is near a Cambridge stop on the Red Line it will take you maybe a half hour to get there (but like all the Boston subways it stops around 12:30 - consider yourselves warned). With the Red Line in the other direction you do run the risk of being too far away or in a bad neighborhood. The Green Line is the easiest connection to the Red Line but if you go too far on it to the west it will take you forever to get there, since the trains are locals and make a lot of street level stops. Of course, a hotel you can walk to is going to be better.

When in the hotel area keep an eye out for tall buildings with hats - my firm designed most of them.
