you're not alone friend. We are almost having the exact same problems you are and are avidly looking for a valuable solution. We've tried the nPower tools a bit, but we still get crashes with larger files.
It seems anything above a 30 mb Revit file is a pain to manage and get to a usable level in Max/Viz. There's talk of translating through the fbx format for the next release of Revit, We'll just have to wait and see if that works....maybe.
