i think you are on the right track, just turn down the multiplier on teh vray window lights, id gove the sun a slight warm colour as well, same with the vray lights, put a cool colour on them. You could also just turn on the environment and lose the vray lights in the left windows. Lookign good for a first attempt!

you haven't mentioned whether you have turned on global illumination or what settings you are using. Your rendering settings are just as important as your light settings. As mentioned, warmer colours for your sunlight and you need to change your exposure control to exponential for interiors (in the gbuffer dialogue box I think). That will make a big difference. Will give you a start. If I were you I would seek out some Vray beginner tutorials as I think it will be hard trying to learn good settings by trial and error.

ive done some more fiddling about. and now i only have two lights. a target direct light for the sun casting vray shadows and a sphere vray light inside of the lamp.
im a little frizzled about splotchy areas around my window and door frames, does this happen becasue i have geometry overlapping in thoughts areas? ive done a few tutorials from evermotion and vismasters. they are helpful, but i cant find answers some of my problems. suggestions? i scene seen to dark and lifeless? |

those splotchy areas can also happen if your irradiance map or light cache (secondary bounce) settings are too low. They are common for me when I am test rendering on low settings but dissapear when the settings go up for the final. Aside from your two lights there is also another light at work in Vray GI scenes providing you have turned on the override max environment button in the environment dialogue of your vray renderer. It works like a skylight and by default is set to 1.0, if you want more light just up the skylight. Alternatively, most people mess around with the exponential exposure control settings like.....dark=2 light=1.5. This will also brighten your scene.

yeah thanks, your a great help! that last one was rendered without exponential. which has improved considerbly. unfortunatly i lost that test scene, becasue 3dsmax crashed.
just curious about what exposure control would best suit exteriors? |
