Default Viz problem

I've had some major problems with Viz lately. I would open an older Viz file (Viz2006) and start rendering it in Viz 2008 and it would crash. So I check various other files and they would also crash. So I email a Viz Tech about the problem. They tell me I should collapse all my modifier stacks and then save it and open it up into the newer version...

That is the worse thing I want to do. How do you easily modify the objects? Everything is turned to mesh

It's like flattening a photoshop file with multiple layers and saving it so I can use it in a newer version. Or exploding the smart ADT objects in autocad. Whats everyone else think of this??

What I've done in the past is merge objects from another file into a newer file. This seems to help with some crashing. I've also noticed that any ADT object from AutoCad ADT would have errors. I used the STL error checker. Is this common that ADT objects are corrupted when imported into Viz?? Has anyone else run into these issues??
