Post Visualization Insider - Creating Vegetation on a Large Scale Part 1 of 2

Anyone that has ever tried adding a large number of quality trees or shrubs to a 3D scene knows what a challenge it can be to do so. Though vegetation is usually not the focus of most projects, when created poorly, it can be a great distraction that ruins what would otherwise be a great visualization. This discussion presents a few ways to overcome the daunting challenge of filling a scene with high quality vegetation.

Good article! Thanks to the Brian's again. Where I work, we are at the same cross-roads as the article speaks about, (which type of vegetation to use) and since I am at a landscape architecture firm, vegetation is a high priority. I have sent the article to my senior-associates (ya know the guys with the company credit card) as more evidence why we need to purchase a 3rd party plug-in for vegetation (and coincidently enough I have been pushing for Onyx as well). Thansk again 3DAS.

Question Re: Visualization Insider - Creating Vegetation on a Large Scale Part 1 of 2

i was just going throught the tutorial and i am not able to get the shadows of the billboards right just a rectangle. brian is saying "Certain shadow types allows you to take advantage of the image in the opacity channel and cast shadows that mimic the shape of the vegetation, as shown in the left image below.". And second i used to do just cast shadow options in the billboard for the shadow of billboard and uncheking visible to camera option off. but it dont seem to work for me know. i m using max8 for now. any ideas ............... i have a scene grab of the page 3 attached.

you can get the same result with adv ray traced shadows too...just not with the default settings. enable optimization to use the opacity map with this shadow type
