Intel has built a prototype of a processor with 80 cores that can perform a trillion floating-point operations per second.

Now let's see...how many Maxwell licenses would I need for that?
Processor cores are now propagating like transistors did in the early CPUs. Without different technology they've hit some ceilings on speed, but going parallel is working out nicely. The great thing is that its all just a temporary approach. Sooner or later we will see things like quantum computing and all this current tech will appear quaint. In the meantime, bring on the multi-core CPUs. With a side of more CPUs. |

maybe we should start 'pooling' our money here are cgarchitect.com and 'save' up for This new rendering system, and start our own in-house rendering farm 'get down on The CGA Farm' for The cga 3d/cg fanatic fantastics who need hi-end rendering (overnite) ** i used To work at a place (no joke, i have actually had a real job in This lifeTime) That called itself, 'Outhouse Productions' The motto was/is 'dont do It 'in house' , send it 'Out house'' i Trained 3 younger guys To do 3d modelling and rendering and Then i got laid off, o well, i guess Life happens ** just an Idea Randy |

I wonder how much Intel will charge for that. Lets see...4 cores = about $1500 so 80 cores should be about $30,000.

The weird thing about quantum is that you get the answer before you ask the question. So you have to be careful about when you take your coffee breaks, you might cause a space-time disturbance and pretty soon we're all French. |

(back on topic) they covered this in diggnation's podcast a few weeks ago. It was quite humorous to hear them joking about the size of the thing. Basically they were cracking that in a few years we'll all have tiny little laptops.... but to use it you would have to wear a giant power supply/heat sink in a backpack to run it.
