Default Yet another computer question: C2T7200 vs C2 E6400

Hello all,

Im looking at the Dell Inspiron E1705, posted here recently. Im ready to buy, but since Dell has a nice way of letting you to build your own, I looked at the desktops as well, and you get so much more for the money. So for around $1200 for either one with these options, I guess the question comes down to the processors. So my question is, am I better off with the desktop?

I read about the Inspiron's processor from posts here, but can anyone tell me about the E6400 in the desktop model? I wanted the laptop for my wife, using it for a few months to finish up more freelance so I can drop the hammer on a high end system. Anythoughts would be apreciated, thanks, AG

Well, the desktop would edge the laptop in CPU speed, but the laptop - it's amazing what they can do for $1200 these days Have you trolled web sites for coupon codes yet? Surely there's going to be some pre-Christmas pricing involved.

I love pre-Christmas pricing. I'm watching the Notre Dame game on a new half-price HDTV

Yeah, the desktop will render faster, but I bet your wife won't appreciate that as much as the laptop's laptopness. Can you up the laptop to 2GB? Or the desktop to something better than the ATI x1300? The x1300 is pretty pathetic by today's standards.

Hi AJ,

thanks, and yes, the boss would love the laptopness. Since a client hosed me on 5k Ive had to reduce my budget for a new machine. So I want the laptop for my wife and Ill use it for a few months until I can buy a better mouse trap.

I can up the Laptop to 2 gig. $100 for a gig from new egg, $165 extra w/ the Dell option. For an extra $179 you can have the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS. I can swing that. It IS amazing what you can get for $1200!

You can change a card in a desktop but not a laptop right? Once its installed in a LT your stuck right (soldered to the mother board) ? Ive been on the Dell site for a month, hoping the prices would budge but no movement.

I havent found any coupons though, where should I look? Since you say 'edge' and not mega edge, Im leaning back towards the laptop.

My first computer in 1995: Compaq 500 meg HD, 256 ram, crappy no name graphics card but a REWRITABLE drive via a 100 meg Scotch disc, discontinued the next year. Totla: $3000...ouch

...more than likely the Dell 1gig configuration uses (2) DDR chips. i think the MB will only have 2 slots, meaning you will need to purchase (2) 1 gig DDR chips.

not absolutely sure, but look into it.

yes, I was going to say the same thing about two ram slots, more than likely that's the case...

Also, someone shafted you for 5 grand ??

As the Scooter used to say, "Holly Cow" thanks for telling me about the ram config...I think you guys are right. Ah the extras, Supersize me please.

Yes, shafted. Job via a friend, his company. Tons of 3D, 129 rendering, 2 months work. ID's, DVD menus, chroma keys and this and that.

So 2 gigs of ram, max can oly use up to 2 gigs right?

Man, that hurts, a friend...
As for 2 gigs, you could install Windows X64, Max 8 and below will use 4 gigs, Max 9 will use everything you can give it...
