Hi Everyone,
We want to set up my workstation with a VM (virtual machine) to run Vista 64 bit and Max 9 64 bit, while keeping XP 32 for all the obvious reasons. Has anyone out there tried Max 9 64 bit on Vista 64 bit? I noticed on Autodesk's site they do not list Vista as a required OS. |

Why Vista? And why a VM? You'd be an early adopter of Vista, with all the issues you get from that, and Max9-64 runs fine on XP64. And VMs are slow... this is for what, VMWare? It's slow, it's splits your system memory, it can't access memory the host OS can't access (so you can't go above 4GB with this method), you don't get your full video card acceleration... and all this impacts Vista and Max, which both want 3D acceleration and a lot of RAM. Is there a really good reason to set it up this way?

Is there actual difference of runing max on a xp 64 instead of just xp 32 bit,
I mean is there a difference in speed of for example viewports or how it handles mesh, or the adventage lays in the larger amount of memory management. Is it worth it of switching to 64 bit system regarding the so called advantage, and what would I notice the most as an improvement ? Thanks Andrew

I found out that you can actually assign the amount of memory you want to either OS, so long as its enough to run it. Until someone does tests with high-end video cards on Vista and Max, I'm reserving judgement. Who knows...maybe with a DX 10 card 3dsMax 9 will fly on Vista. Be nice Mr. Forum Moderator. |

Vista is currently unsupported, or so I've been told. I haven't tried it myself. But I'm impressed with how difficult it is to get a PC without Vista now - a colleague was looking for one the other day and between us all we could come up with was Dell refurbs and Optiplex boxes - with really limited selection of components like video cards. (One more good reason to build your own.)
