Default Looking ahead to siggraph 2007

Okay, so I realize this is like 8 months off..... but I'm starting to plan and think about siggraph 2007. I have never been and this would be my first trip to one.

I was wondering if anyone out there in the arch-vis field has any recommendations. For instance, in what capacity do you visit siggraph... the whole time or just a day or two? For fees...are you a member, benefits to membership? Or how does your time work with tying the trip into Vismasters DVC?

Any thoughts would be appreciated... THX!

That makes two of us... I'm also looking at my first trip and would be interested in any CG Architect events, seminars, etc.

Thanks!

Here's my own personal recomendations:

Stay somewhere close. If possible walking distance or at the very least on the shuttle route. You HAVE to stay at one of the approved hotels to get a shuttle pass now.

Take a look at the courses and see if there are a couple you would be interested in attending. If not, then just get the exhibits plus pass. The courses tend to be for programmers and researchers and not much for artists.

Plan on a couple of days for the exhibit hall. It's big (althogh not as big as it used to be)

Take time away of the exhibit to check out the art gallery, the animation theaters, and the new technologies. They are open continually and are a nice break from the commotion of the exhibit hall.

The DVC is awesome, go to it. There isn't much else at siggraph that is directly related to arch viz.

Bring your printed portfolio. Even if you aren't looking for a job, there will be times you'll want to crack it open during a conversation.

Bring a hot chick with you so you can get invited to the cool parties. In all seriousness though you should plan on attending some of the evening events as well like the Autodesk even where they will unveil new software versions.

I've been meaning to look at the siggy site to see if they have hotels lined up already. I would like to stay at one of the close ones, and they book solid before the event.

A few days is good. But visiting San Diego would be worth some extra time, too. I don't have family that far south, but maybe one of my sisters would come down from central CA to help me enjoy the city.

The DVC would be a must-attend for all of us, if you are going to be in San Diego anyway. I hope to not be speaking this year. I'm sure Jeff and Randall will organize a great conference.

That's too bad. I thought your presentation was the best of the lot. I could have got a lot more out of it if I had either taken better notes or could review the recording. Is it possible to get that? Better subject for another thread perhaps.

Definetly! It's actually my families favorite place to visit hence they will be coming along this time, even the kids for a few days either before or after the conference. I grew up in the central valley and went there from time to time since I've been a kid so I know the are OK. Best surfing on the Continental US, tide pools, Coronado Island is worth a short drive, plus you've got some really big boats to tour, and Old Town is worth a visit.

You can usually get away with buying the cheapest floor only pass. 3 days is how long I usually stay. I have never gone to one of the papers or seminars but the digital theater is wonderful and worth the extra cash. The emergsing tech are is my favorite spot and it is included with the floor pass. I also like taking the masters classes that adesk offers, Ted Boardman is usaully teaching one and it just helps me justify the trip. Now I did miss this last year so I did not hear Ernest, but the Importance of Hearing Ernest has been made clear and I hope he will speak again when I can attend.

Siggraph is fun and is a way for me to recharge. It is inspiring and that is why I go. I come away from the conferences really jazzed, I have never made deals or made money from it. I go to get that feeling that I love what I do back. And it is fun to meet people, I have a great respect for Jeff after seeing what a descent person he is although only meeting Ernest for an evening he is forever wearing a red hawaiin shirt.

And I plan to bring the family this time as well. We all love Orcas.

Just a heads up on the DMVC in San Diego. We are still finalizing our preps for IMAGINA right now, but the conference this summer is currently planned to be a 2 day event. SIGGRAPH always ends on Thursday so the DMVC will be the Friday and Saturday after the SIGGRAPH conference.

We will also have special hotel rates for our conference, but the availability will most likely not begin until 1-2 days before our conference starts. Not enough to get you covered for SIGGRAPH.

OK, but the worst would be a day or two at 'regular' rates before the conference rate kicks in. And they won't discount it ALL that much, I would bet. The thing I'm looking at is actually booking early for once in my life. So as soon as you know where the thing is going to be, please let us know.

We should have more info late Feb or March.
