I want to model a structure simular to this image. I have the basic 3d model done, just straight flat faces and now i'm looking for a smart way (algorithm, shader??) to get a simular effect as by this designer.
![]() What do you guys think is a good approach, because modeling this by hand is hopeless. Would displacment/opacity maopping be the way to go? and if so how do I make sure that I get a thikker rim at the edges, or would converting the mesh to a editable poly and make use of the bridge function be a workaround (so not working with the faces, but work with the edges instead) |

You can try boolean tools, though opacity map is the easiest way to make it,but yeah your right, you have to think how to make the edges thicker.

using a map or 2 might be the way to go!
make a map in ps of the holes (the holes being black on white & the edges sharp), then take that same map and duplacate it. On the second map select all the black holes and give them an outside glow from black to white so that it has soft edges (this will give the rounded edges). then apply the first map in the opacity slot and the second map in the bump slot, also tick the double sided check-box so that the backfaces also render. you also want to apply a uwv map to control where the holes are placed on the object. |

I agree with Adriaan - for 3dsMax, his method will work the best, since you already have your basic form.
Do you feel like crediting the person who created this tutorial? [ETA] The little visual tutorial is by Jonah Barnett over on the Rhino Newsgroup.

Hey,
Same as above opacity map and some bump map, you could also incorporate some displacement map to add some thickness, but this relys on a third party render like vray or fr. cheers!

If you have 3DS Max 9 than this job is a piece of cake. Can be done without any plugins and in a very fast manner – model just the exterior (how you like) / use Pro Booleans (included) for advanced cuts / shell modifier / Mental Ray for rendering (“round edges” without extra polygons – new feature) - http://download.autodesk.com/global/...nts_medium.mov.
That`s all and have fun with all those new and extremely powerful features. Mihai |
