With the newer versions of PTgui PRO you can actually quite easily make full spherical HDRI panoramas without a tripod at all, because it can align handheld shots. IMO it does a better job algin single images than PhotMatix and other HDRI programs, so I use it also for normal HDRI single images.
But a good tripod is still a good idea because it gives you less job after shooting.
