It's been awhile since I've posted some WIPs here in CGA. So here goes.

Nevermind the background and the empty enourage. What I'd like to hear from you guys is the lighting and the mood of the structure which I'd really like to be improved. What I wanted to achieve is a dramatic lighting set in the early morning about 8-11am.

Comments and suggestions are widely welcome.

Best regards to all.

The lighting looks like it is coming down from later in the day/morning, closer to noon (it's approaching vertical).

I think that the building looks fine, maybe the windows could use some reflections of the sky and surroundings. The sky and the entourage will have dramaticatically change the 'feeling', so without it it's difficult to tell, esp. with that sky.

Lastly, the building looks more like a jail than a school, imho. Maybe a renovated warehouse, but I see nothing to suggest that it has anything to do with children and/or education. Things to consider with the entourage.

I should add...I like the lighting on the building, the textures, and the transparencies of the canopies.

Try increasing the sun angle to get some more dramatic shadows and add the entourage. Kids and color will bring it to life (as a school).

I should add too: Its not a school for children but for young adults.
And, from the current vantage point, the sun baffles (louvre-like shade) look pretty much like cell bars.

I'll post a shot with an entourage soon if it helps.

I agree with reflections of the windows, and also transparency so you can see light and shadow entering the building

I also agree it does not feel like a school

Doesn't look very inviting. Makes me not want to send my hard earned tuition there.
If you are using a dome light, make sure it is not a perfect hemisphere so you get some indirect light to affect the underside and brighten recesses a bit.
If you are using HDRI, raise your black point cutoff.
If you are using Vray, try overiding the Max environment in the render dialog with a very slight light blue and play with the multiplier.
If you are using standard Max sunlight system, try switching to a generic domelight with a direct sun source light added for shadows.

good work so far but it's got a long way to go yet to feel dramatic.

There is a good level of contrast in value, but it's very monochromatic. It generally goes from light brown to dark brown, not very dramatic.
