Default Max/Vray32 on 64bit OS?

If i install 3dsmax9-32bit + vray1.5.rc3-32bit on a 64bit OS (xp64 or Vista) :
- Can 3dsmax/vray use the whole 4gb memory I got on my PC? or do I need to use 64bit max/vray to do that
- Will it run smoothly or very slow? 'cause from what i heard 64bit OS uses emulation to run 32bit apps

The reason I still uses 32bit max/vray is because currently not all plugins are available in the 64bit version. But I'd like to use 64bit OS to gain advantage to all my 4gb RAM and avoid the 3gb-switch steps.

Thanks,
Harry

I can't speak to the memory issues (I don't have anything with more than 2GB) but I've done a bunch of testing with Max9 in 32 and 64 bit on XP64 and 32 on XP32, and there is no speed loss running it in 32 bit on 64 compared to 32 bit on 32.

yep, it'll make use of all 4 gigs (well, maybe not all of them, but still..), both max and vray that is. and there won't be any performance problem, 32 bit apps run just fine on 64 bit OSs. only thing I seem to remember someone having problems running max 9 on vista (not 100% sure about this though).

I've read it's the opposite. There's a benchmark somewhere that says Max 32-bit runs slower on Windows 64... I'll try to find the link and post it here.

The only issues I had were with the display - the original FireGL driver I had for XP64 wasn't very good, so my display was slower in XP64, but a newer driver cleared that up.

I've also read that 32-bit Max on 64-bit OS could be slower (like 5%) unless it was memory-constrained. We have a Renderfarm running Max and Vray on Win Server 2003-64, and no problems after a year. We opted for 64-bit knowing that it would save upgrade hassles later. If you have no driver issues, incl print drivers, I'd go 64-bit now.

Thanks for the replies!

And for performance, how does Max32 on 64bitOS handle large scenes? Will there be any better stability, or no difference at all ?
