changing xref objects

hi all,

got a little problem. i have a scene with desks scattered around, all xref objects from one file. now i have to change the desks to give various colours on their backing board.
obviously i cant change the colour in the xref file, as it will change every desks colour. is there a way i can select a group of desks, and tell them to xref from another file (a duplicate with a different colour)? i dont really want to re-xref and reposition 75% of my desks.

any ideas much appreciated! cheers, dean

Just re-create in your main scene different materials for your desks, and then just apply those mat's to your xRef's. So u don't need to change any of your xRef's models.

Just make sure that you un-check "propogate materials to instances" under the options in the material editor.
