Maxscript is a very powerful and versatile tool within max, although many people don't use it and can get everything done they need. It is a way to modify and extend Max. We here at Neoscape use it in 4 basic ways, Animation tools, Modeling tools, Rendering tools and Utilities.

Scripting is a way to control the program in a procedural way, a button to open all groups, a button to close all groups, an interface to convert materials between different rendering engines, a utility to collect all bitmaps and move them to reside in the local project and re-point the files.

I have said that if you have to do something more than 18 times you should try and write a script.

All of this being said it is a deep subject and not something that should be lumped into learning Max, scripting will be something you would learn after you have a few years of experience with Max in my opinion.

Good luck,

-Nils
