I am a modo, Lightwave, maxwell user. I find modo very intuitive and flexible. I love customizing it to my needs. Currently its only modeling, painting, rendering app. but for the most part, thats the majority of my work. But instead of me talking about it, you should just give it a try, http://www.luxology.com and decide for your self.
As for comparison, the modeler to me is awesome. I actually got into modo for its modeling back in 101 days and I haven't touched LW's modeler for a while unless its something specific. I also use a few Archvis scripts from Neil Hayes www.archvisuals.co.uk In terms of rendering, its really fast and compares really well if you want to get realistic results in reasonable times. It isn't a maxwell replacement, but then again, the time you spend rendering is fractions of Maxwell's. And unless its something really complex, it just isn't worth it to go from modo IMHO
Again, just try it. Thats my advice for any software, free your self for a few days, download a few trials and fire them up. I do that every once in a while to see whats out there.
