Povray is a raytrace engine. Its free and has some impressive images in the galleries, mostly by a fairly small number of users. Its been around for about 6 years I think, maybe longer. It may be a text interface I think.

POVRAY is oldschool..... anyone who can crank out quality work with that engine deserves huge acclaim as far as I'm concerned. With the current engines out like VRay Fry, and Maxwell, the only reason to consider POVray is if you are up for a challenge, have a lot of time on your hands, and really like code.

Almost any render engine has some good images made by a few guys who are kickass at it, but there are good ones and bad ones in terms of the advanced capabilities available and ease of use for beginning to intermediate users. Povray is not one of the good ones in either category.
If you have Max and don't want to spend more money, look no further than mental ray, which you've already paid for. Heck, even if you do want to spend more money, try mental ray first and maybe you end up spending the money upgrading your office coffee equipment. |

I used to use Blender and Yafray.
Also found Max in the meantime. I still respect it fully, but it doesnt make as much sense as Max & Vray.
