Thumbs up FR RESOURCES: free materials

I posted these a while ago on the cebas forum, maybe some people here will find them useful (these are MAX only shaders):

RANDOM MATERIALS:

These are created with either procedurals or the bitmaps that come tih 3D Studio Max so there is no need to download additional bitmaps. They have varying levels of quality (and usefulness). Check the attachments for a preview

Here´s a 3D Studio Max 9 scene:

Here´s a zip file with the .mat with all the materials and the previews:

MAYANG SHADERS:

This next pack of materials is based on bitmaps take from the Mayang´s Texture Page ( http://mayang.com/textures/ ) modified in Photoshop to be tillable and create bump maps/displacement maps/etc.. Since the bitmaps have a pretty high resolution (the whole collection is about 50 megs.), I made five smaller packs. Each pack (compressed with winrar) includes 4 materials with all the required bitmaps, samples of each material (seen here) and a .mat file with all the settings.
Please note that a lot of these make heavy use of MTD, and since MTD is scene dependent you are going to have to configure it yourself in order to get the same results with the shader.

Yes of course, however bare in mind that the restrictions that appear on the website where I downloaded them from still apply. Check their FAQ in here: http://mayang.com/textures/faq.html

I understand the use policy, they were only for my personal use. But how did you get around this issue with respect to giving them away. Did you have to get permission first before you published them here?

"You cannot use the textures for anything that directly competes with us. This includes, putting the textures on your own website, selling them, or giving them away. This restriction includes the textures themselves, as well as any minor modifications, for example, you may not make our texture seamless or tileable and then sell them."

As I understand it, this is means I cannot profit or take credit for their work, none of which I am doing. I have always included links to their website.
The author also states that "You can use the textures in your school projects, to make CD sleeves, posters, in movies, in videogames etc - anything where you have added your own artistic effort." I assume creating shaders is considered within this category of stuff you have added your own artistic effort, as it was way beyond just putting the bitmap on the diffuse slot. Some of the bump maps took several hours to create.

However, you are probably right, I should email them just in case.

I understand the concern. Several weeks ago, I contacted the local Certainteed Sales Manager to discuss the use of images that they have provided on their web site. The disclaimer stated that I could not use them for any other use than to order shingles from them. After explaining that I wanted to make a 3D model using their images to display the final architectural model, he explained that no one has asked that question to him before. This spawned several emails, phone conversations, legals descriptions, and finally we have started to create a set of multi image textures that can be downloaded for architectural use. Hopefully this will be finished by the end of the year. If I had to do it over, I am not sure if it is really worth it or not.
