Default Modo stability/crashing??

I'm trying to decide between Modo and C4D to replace the 3D software I recently bailed on. There's a thread on the Modo forum which seems to indicate that there is a SIGNIFICANT issue with Modo crashing...this is very disconcerting. The last thing I want is an unstable program, one that may/will crash several times in the course of the day. It is one of the contributing factors why I bailed on my previous 3D package. Modo seems to offer SO much in one (reasonably priced) package...but then I remember being so enthralled with the Maxwell pre-release images that I bought in early...never to use the program due to the untenable long render times.

Any comments on Modo stability?

Modo has been my main 3D application for the last 16 months. Now, it is an indispensable tool in work flow. IMHO Modo 301 is one of the best solutions out there, if not the best, because of its tool set, value, learning material, OS and community support. Modeling is a joy and the rendering engine is very nice. I have not experienced recurrent stability problems with Modo in Windows nor OSX. I am a beta tester and I can tell you that a lot of work and effort went into polishing the final release for 301. I would suggest you to download the demo version and give it a try. There is a lot of video tutorials at Luxology TV. Also, make sure to check vertexmonkey.com.

Here is some of the architectural modeling and rendering done with Modo:

There is no 301 Demoversion yet so you can try it out but it is supposed to come out eventually. I would try it out before buying to see if it will work for the type of projects you do.

Right now I find it to be not as stable as I whish and reading the Luxology forum it seems like I am not the only one. I hope that this will be fixed with an update soon.

Cheers, Florian

Thank you both for your replies. Got in a situation where I had to make up my mind and decide, so went with C4D plus VRay. Modo appears very enticing...the images look great (but then so did Maxwell), but ultimately the stability of C4D and the fact that it's a proven application that has been around for over ten years, along with having VRay were the deciding factors.

i've been using modo 201 and 301, i have to say 301 is a vast improvement. the crashing i've only experienced when trying to push my pc to the limits, modo is at the mercy of my athlon 64 and 2 gig of ram. my coleague has a brand new quad core with 4 gigs and hasn't had a crash yet. plus i've read on the luxology forums about the VBO setting in the openGL preferences. turning it on or off helsp with stability based on your system specs.

Yes you can. You just won't be able to take full advantage of your 64bit processor. Modo is supposed to release a 64bit version soon.
