Many applications such as AutoCAD and Sketchup allow you to draw a line (or do another command) and while you are still in that command, you can pan by pressing down on the roller wheel. That is how you pan in Max too. However, it sucks that in Max, if you are in a command, like drawing a line for instance, and if you try to pan by pressing in on the roller wheel, you are kicked out of the command. Why would that have ever been part of the programming?

Because i is WAY faster than pressing "I" to move around as you are zoomed in an area, or zooming in and out as you draw lines.

That's one I've shouted a lot since Max 1... but, for some reason, at some point, I simply realized I didn't care as much and forgot about it... It's weird how we simply get used to certain things...
Anyway, you have my vote.

i just use the i key to pan while drawing a spline

Second the "i" key, will centre you view around the cursor, same thing as panning basically just not as smooth.

yeah the i key is great but for big shapes its just not instictive. The pan on the wheels is the best method

you can sort of pan with the roller wheel.

Use the roller wheel to zoom in and out, just be sure not to click the wheel otherwise you'll be kicked out of the command.

Also set the zoom arounf pointer option in the preferences
