rgb values and advanced lighting - viz 4

I've been struggling with radiosity and advanced lighting in Viz 4 and was hoping for some tips.

Often I am required to make short notice changes and therefore using radiosity becomes an obstacle, in that the calculation takes a long time to get good results. I do however like to use a skylight or daylighitng system for global illumination.

I've seen some comment to the effect that the materials in the material editor will appear darkened. Mine always end up blacked out almost entirely. Usually by messing around with image files in photoshop the colour becomes screwed up by the time I render.

I have also used max and light tracer (which isn't really available in Viz) and I've noticed that I don't have to modify the imageas as much.

Is there a better answer for taking control of how much daylighting blows colours out?

One other side effect I've noticed is that my RPC people get a little messed up. Their colour is off. I exclude them from all light sources and use the RPC global editor to set an illumination value.
