Default objects don't display in max 2008?

Has anyone else here had issue with objects not displaying in shaded viewports? I'm starting on a scene and there are less the 5K polys now and I have some objects that only display in wireframe or when I select them in a shaded view. Another 3D guy that works with me has had the exact same problem several times as well. Any thoughts/fixes?

A couple more clues: It seems to be limited to objects I have instanced and when I turn on "edge faces" everything appears normally.

edit: scratch the instanced object thing. It is limited to objects that have materials assigned to them. Anything with a material assigned doesn't appear in a shaded view with edge view turned off. Anything that doesn't have a material assigned appears normally.

Sounds like a graphics card problem, though I wouldn't know the solution.

I'll check the max forums and see what I find.

In Max 2008, you say? Yes I have had very similar problems, even when viewing just a handful of objects in isolation mode. It's specific only to the computer I am working on, and it only seems to affect one specific file.

I'm going to try merging the contents and materials into a new file, just that I haven’t done much with that project lately so it's not been a priority. I'll let you know if it works.

Here's the post I started a while back, if it's of any help...

I have the same problem. Ill be watching this thread.
Oh, I have Max 2008 running on XP64 and an Nvidia 7600GT with the latest drivers. Max is using DirectX9.
Im also still having menu display problems. Also, floating menu problems. None of these things are critical, can still work, but when you pay $4k for software, you want it to work properly...
