Default viewport in shaded slower than wireframe in max 2008

Hi,
In some complex scenes (but not that much) i'm having some problems with viewport performance in shaded mode in max 2008. It's getting really slow compared to wireframe mode. In max 7 it used to be the opposite (wireframe slower than shaded). I'm aware of the gradient ramp "bug" when showed in viewport but is there anything else that could be the reason of the problem ?

computer spec : geforce 7950 GT and core2duo e6600 running in dx9 mode

Thank you

To my knowledge shaded is always slower than wireframe... the reason your scene is slow could be due to the heavy load. Its hard to say having no clue how many triangles and faces your viewport is handling. Post some info.

about 500 000 polys, but even with most of the objects hidden it's still slow compared to similar situations in max 7. max 2008 seems to have problems handling large object numbers even when they are hidden.

I believe your problem is not really Max 2008's fault. This new release has extremely fast viewports, and you can easily rotate high-poly scenes in a flash. And wireframe will always be faster than shaded mode...
Anyway, check your viewport configuration. Set it to Direct3D instead of software.

I'm looking for more info on this...my viewport and material editor become painfully slow when I use a gradient ramp, I use Max9 with XP64 Direct3D 9 on an Nvidia Quadro FX 3500

any thoughs or workarounds?

Thanks,
-=Rob
