Default 2008 AVC Competition has been Launched!

I just wanted to let everyone know that the 2008 AVC has been launched! There are a few things to note about this year's competition:

1. The qualification round requires you to submit 2 portfolio images and 1 image that you create for the qualification challenge. Deadline March 30.

2. The prize for winning this year's competition is an all expense paid trip to the 2008 Mundos Digitales Conference in La Coruna, Spain. You will have the opportunity to present your AVC winning project to the conference attendees and receive worldwide noteriety.

3. The two challenges that selected competitors will compete in are based around creating a rendering and animation for an imaginary interpretive/tourist center on the Tower of Hercules site. The Tower of Hercules, in La Coruna, is Spain's world heritage site nominee.

4. The winners of competition will be announced at the Mundos Digitales Conference on July 1, 2008.

For more information about the competition and how to enter, visit the competition site here:

AVC Competition,

The rules do not cover this point.

As you cannot change the ratio of the shapes is it ok to expose a small percent of a shape on the outside of your model?

eg: one percent of a cylinder sticking out of the side of a box, to provide a relief.

Are displacement maps allowed? Or is that, technically, adding geometry?

That would not be allowed as that is adding geometry at render time.

Am I missing something, to qualify you must submit 2 porfolio pieces and 1 qualification challenge, yet I cant seem to find any info on the qualification challenge. Is this yet to be anounced? or am I not seeing something?

Rules 1. You must use all of the shapes and primitives provided in your scene
2. You can not modify the geometry of the provided shapes in any way, EXCEPT to uniformly scale them up or down in size or to add small fillets/chamfers to catch the light on the edges. If you do scale them the original proportions must be maintained.
3. You can re-use the shapes in the scene as many times as you like and they do not all have to be the same scale.
4. You can apply textures to the shapes or solid color.
5. You can not introduce any other geometry to the scene other than what is provided, with the exception of a flat ground plane.
6. The background plate can be a solid color, a gradient or a bitmap of your choice.
7. Please be sure to read the main competition RULES
