About question two: You've got a mail!

Hi Nodar,

The render farm is mine, and so with distributed Rendering i have 44 xeon processors rendering one frame (at the same time), so actually it would take less than 3 minutes to render assuming you have a quad ofcourse.

And well, Yes, i do believe it would take me less than 6 hours to finish that scene. At the end of the day, you asked a question, and i gave you my personal answer. I'm not saying i'm the standard, but I know what i'm talking about

like i said, it's mine (as in for our office work only). we don't rent it out, but if you're ever in a tight spot, drop me an email and if it's free, then by all means will help you out.

But i can't urge you enough...once you get some savings together..invest in one, no matter how small, and then keep adding to it as time goes by. It took me a lot of time, money and hard work to pull it together, but the fast turnovers now really make up for all the hard times spent pulling it together!

Distributed rendering. I have 32Ghz and 32g Ram working on one rendering. As I mostly do stills, this is probably about 8 times what you have on board your PC. 45/8= 6mins rendertime for your 45.

I think the 6 hours modeling sounds about right if well planned. I spend a long time on materials though.

One thing is for sure George, Clients will take the Piss if you let them. I suspect the woman also has a little of the interior designer in her, Spotting the fact that there where no flowers, and for that one little change, could be hours of work, if you then have to find the right flowers, alter materials, make proxies, do more light calculations, and more rendering....or even worse, run into rendering problems.

When I saw the thumbnail of your image, i thought the colours/images looked a little cartoony, but when i opened the image, I thought, Bloody Hell, you have done well to get that done in 16 or so hours... I think that even if you spent a further 16 hours doing all the changes, The end result would only be say 10% improvement, and if thats what they want and are prepared to pay, then fine. Some will just keep requesting changes, as a delay tactic, maybe some do it on purpose, SO THEY CAN BREAK OUT OF THE CONTRACT(its all down to the contract), Perhaps clients need to be taught the Law of dimminishing returns.

I have been in the same boat, and I am sure many people here have.

^ I agree.
Set a strict number of reviews on your image, anythign after the 2-3 or so stages and its a variation which you could do on a hourly rate or whatever you agree on.

You could do one at modelling stage with a white material to agree on geometry and camera angles. Then a first textured / lit version, some feedback then onto final lighting/texturing and post production.

Make it a clear process and explain it with example images and tell your client the kind of feedbback you need at each stage, otherwise uneducated clients tend to go on a flower and cushion arranging rampage.

I would say 16 or so hours is fine for those images. Amer must be VERY FAST to do that image from scratch in 6 hours!

Dont sell yourself short or be afraid when communicating with the client, if you take the lead and offer suggestions help out then you will have a easier time doing the work. Remeber these clients are coming to you to help them at something you are an expert at, take the initiative and they will have more confidence to let you do teh work without meddling.
