Default no paterns visable in camera view

in the othro view can see the patterns for siding etc.

but in camera (perspective views) no

just a pale blue where the patterns should be

If you zoom in does the pattern show up? Might be too dense to display as lines when zoomed out.

no, actually I am much closer to the model in camera view than in orthographic

must be some setting somewhere

Is your fill pattern a model pattern or drafting pattern?

Only model patterns will show in 3D. The grey shade could be the shading colour of the material (top setting in materials)
