Default Photographic exposure vs Logarithmic

Hi,

I was wondering what you guys' preference is between the two, for both interior and exterior scenes.

A friend of mine told me that Mr photographic exposure should be used for outside only, is he right or wrong?

In that case, is it ok to use Mr Photographic with standard lights, in say, a fairly closed room?

mr photographic all the way

your friend is sadly mistaken, it works fantastically for interiors. Only thing to remeamber is to try the unitless physical scale, and set your own according to the types of lights being used. As a recomended practice use the photometric lights and or the mrsun and sky system

Interesting stuff about the physical scale...

I've been using the exposure (EV) to help brighten up my scenes but never really played around with the physical scale yet. It's currently on physical units (default).

Bring the unitless number (now at 1500) up or down would also be a tool to brighten/darken the scene?

You can also drop the decay on the lights, too.
I've been told going as low as 1.5 is acceptable, but not below 1.5
My last scene was rendered with decay at 1.8 and it brightened it so much and didn't (seem) to introduce noise.

Thanks, I'll try this out too.

By the way, has anyone purchased the mental bout max videos?

Great stuff it seems...I'm wondering though (and if Brian Brandley could chime in that would be great):

Since I'm a max 2008 user, which of the "interior lighting setup" contained in "how to series" should I purchase?

Would it be redundant to purchase the M2, M3 and M4 in addition to the M7 and M8?

Hi Khaled,

Happy to chime in if asked.

In essence all of them are relevant. The earlier videos go
more in depth on a few things such as Photon set up and
the daylight system, but also cover some non lighting material.

The Max 2008 ones bring some of the workflow upto date
using the improved toolset in Max 2008/09 such as the
Sky Portals.

Hope that helps a little, please feel free to PM or email
me if you need any extra help.

regards
Bri

Basically by using unitless it is possible to specify a physical scale ala log exposure.

I must admit I dont fully understand physical scale, some days it all makes sence others not so much

For exteriors I use cdm2 and for interiors unitless

Thanks Brian!

That's what I thought. The max 9 videos seem to cover a bit more ground, which is always useful.

Great site for us mental ray users.
