I believe that the service pack addressed this, but I haven't installed it yet to find out.
I turned the viewport cube off when i first opened 2009, and haven't checked it since. maybe it is still active, and i need to rename it like you.

...is there a service pack for 2009?

Wow - sounds like well worthy of a 25 meg download!
Thanks for the link

Oh yeah. Well, reckon that's pretty important, too.

Just wondering how AutoDesk managed to trademark the term "Steering Wheel".
Wonder if they're going to sue the car manufacturers...

view cube and steering wheel are two of the most usless new features I have ever come across in any software

I installed the Sp to try solve some network rendering issues and the view qube problem. Didn't help the network as it turned out to the router all along

Finally installed the service pack, and now the file I was having trouble is not crashing. I am keeping my fingers crossed though.
