Years ago, when I was in highschool. Our school would open up the sports fields for parking whenever there was a big rugby match on at the stadium down the road. Every year a particular farmer and big time supporter of the team would drive 6 hours just to watch a game. Each time he would present the teacher and the grounds man a bottle of brandy. These were $300 bottles from the farmers own farm and brewrey. Of course the teacher accepted but the grounds mans handed the bottle back in disgust saying that he doesn't pollute his body with alcohol.

So yes check before you send alcohol, but I am sure the gesture will be appreciated.

I've given bottles of Port and bottles of wine for both business gifts and personal gifts.

I once took a $100 bottle of Port to a friend's for dinner, only to be disappointed he didn't serve any with dinner! Man, my mouth was watering for it, too.

A case of leinkiugel's ( http://www.leinie.com/av.html ) might be functional. Tell 'em (if they are'nt local or don't know the story) it's brewed from the stream of 'Big Eddie'. Good client 'Big Eddie' is a crystal clear stream flowing through the NorthWoods ... Bad client use the urban Myth- Big Eddie is a Horse

Over all referals and actions that are above the normal day to day operations, contracts deserve special attention-response. Personalized -Unique-creative 'gifts' may keep you closer to the front of peoples minds. Always good

There's a protocol for that. When you bring wine to a dinner it's a gift to the host and they don't expect to serve it unless you coordinated in advance.

OT, a good Scotch is a good gift, but remember that a lot of Americans don't have the taste for the fuller bodied stuff. Unless you know the guy well enough to know his tastes, go highland, not Islay. Glenlivet is a good option, Macallan is the safest bet (and almost never fails to impress).

A basket of gourmet cookies or brownies for their office is the way to go. You'll make a good impression and "everyone" at their office will remember you for it

This will definitely be my way... No one can resist sweets. Ever tried leaving a jar of gummy bears in the office or a cake in the office fridge? Even people on "diets" can't help themselves... actually it's especially the ones on "diets' that eat the most now that I think about it.
Anyways everyone in the office is bound to remember you like Eddie said.

A basket of gourmet cookies........

thanks all for the ideas. yes, i think this is the way to go. i was thinking of a local chocolate company box, but that can be heavy. the gourmet cookies - lite (some type of lite sugar cookie), specific and easier to eat a couple or three during the day. as opposed to pigging out on two or three dense hunks of chocolate while smoking a cigarette after a half dozen glazed donuts for breakfast and a diet coke.

Wish we could get that here in Aussie. Drank my fair share when I was backpacking in Vancouver. That, and FireBall... need to find someone on ebay to sell me some
